Professional management & treatment of pain from disc herniations
The vertebrae of the spine are separated and protected by discs made of cartilage. The inner substance of each disc is soft, enabling the disc to perform as a shock absorber to provide cushion to the surrounding vertebrae during movement. Injury, spinal trauma, sudden movements the spine is unprepared or too weak to perform or natural aging can cause discs to deteriorate and allow the soft inner substance of the disc to rupture (herniated disc) through the outer layer. Pain ensues when this ruptured outer layer compresses or irritates a nerve root.
RISK FACTORS/CAUSES OF A HERNIATED DISC
Factors that increase your risk of a herniated disc include:
Improper form when lifting
Smoking
Obesity
Repetitive strenuous activities
Weak spinal stabilizing structures
COMMON HERNIATED DISC SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of herniated discs, which can be periodic or constant and chronic, include:
Pain that radiates down one extremity (arm or leg)
Leg weakness and difficulty lifting the front part of the foot (foot drop)
Loss of bowel or bladder control
Numbness or tingling in one leg or arm
