Eat Your Broccoli!
New research suggests that a compound in broccoli, called sulforaphane, is highly toxic to the bacteria helicobacter pylori, which is widely associated with stomach ulcers and stomach cancer. Although the testing was done on mice, it will be repeated soon in humans. The researchers claim reasonable amounts of the broccoli killed the bacteria.
We have known that broccoli (and related plants like cauliflower and cabbage) seem to prevent cancers in the digestive tract and this may help explain why.
Go Nuts!
The U.S. Physician’s Health Study, a study of over 21,000 men since 1982, reports that deaths from sudden heart attacks were cut in half in those that at least one ounce of nuts twice per week compared to those who rarely ate nuts. Other less sudden deaths from complications of heart disease were 30% lower in those who ate nuts. We like to recommend walnuts because they contain omega 3 fatty acids that are essential yet scarce in the American diet. (Flaxseed and cold water fish like salmon, tuna, mackerel, and sardines are other rich sources). Other good choices for nuts are pecans and almonds.
